We are pleased to announce that "The Future of Cities as Envisioned by Fashion: Shibuya and Harajuku, Where Dreams and Possibilities Intersect" has been selected as the SIW FES keynote for Saturday, November 9th at SOCIAL INNOVATION WEEK 2024 (SIW), a festival of social and cultural design to be held from Friday, October 18th to Sunday, November 10th.
Additionally, a number of other programs were announced, including "Brands Taking on New Apparel Culture," which discussed the future of circularity in the apparel industry, including unique, cross-brand initiatives that contribute to reducing environmental impact, and "Sustainable Culture Spreading from Shibuya," which discussed the ideas and initiatives needed to evolve Shibuya from a city of fashion culture to a city of sustainable (fashion) culture.
The theme of SIW2024 is "CONNECTING COLORS OF DOTS: By encountering and connecting with unique ideas and solutions, we will become 'creators of change' and create the next social innovation." Together with a wide variety of companies, creators, and artists, we will create new business ideas for a better society, the future potential of cities discovered through music and art, the emergence of new cultures born from the streets, future life as shown by technology, and messages that will inspire the next era.

Keynote | The Future of the City as Envisioned by Fashion: Towards Shibuya and Harajuku as the Intersection of Dreams and Possibilities
Harajuku-born fashion designer Maruyama Keita, who is celebrating the 30th anniversary of his debut, Shibuya PARCO store manager Hiramatsu, who has supported the Shibuya fashion scene, and creative director Tsuji Asako, who tackles social issues both as a creator and disseminator, will discuss the evolution of fashion culture born in Shibuya and Harajuku and its future possibilities.
Shibuya and Harajuku are areas that have nurtured their own unique personalities and cultures. However, redevelopment and the passage of time have led to fears of standardization. Can we paint the future of the city through fashion? What is the future of the city and culture that we build together with the next generation? What should be new and what should be preserved? How can we connect culture to the next generation?
In this session, we will exchange each perspective and discuss how to preserve the individuality of Shibuya and Harajuku and pass it on to the next generation, aiming to be an opportunity to think together about the future of fashion, culture, and cities.

The brand takes on new apparel culture
The word "sustainable" has become widespread in society, and nowadays, various initiatives that consider the global environment are being undertaken regardless of industry or genre.
In the Shibuya/Harajuku area, the center of fashion and culture, a unique joint repair event called "DO REPAIRS" has been held since May 2023, bringing together popular outdoor brands with stores in the neighborhood. In addition to repairing users' favorite items on the spot, this initiative also provides a lecture on how to maintain clothing, providing an opportunity to "experience" the importance of using a product for a long time with love, and how this directly leads to environmentally friendly actions.
In this session, we will discuss the future of circularity in the apparel industry, including unique initiatives like "DO REPAIRS" that transcend brand boundaries and contribute to reducing environmental impact.

Sustainable culture originating from Shibuya
The fashion industry has come to be seen as an industry with a very large environmental impact due to mass production, mass consumption, and mass disposal, as well as increased resource and energy consumption in manufacturing and a shorter life cycle, and this has become an international issue. In recent years, efforts toward sustainable fashion, which takes into consideration the environmental impact from clothing production to wearing and disposal, have been expanding rapidly.
Shibuya has been the birthplace of various fashion cultures, including gal, Harajuku, and street styles. In this session, we will discuss the ideas and initiatives necessary to evolve Shibuya from a city of fashion culture to a city of sustainable (fashion) culture.
