2023 Next Generations Activity Report

Report

Together with partner companies and organizations, we will introduce examples of how we are creating opportunities for children to experience, shine, and connect with street sports!

"Next Generations," a street sports project managed by Future Design Shibuya with the aim of promoting street sports and raising awareness of etiquette, and allowing young people to actively participate, has launched a total of four projects in 2023, together with partner companies and organizations, in Shibuya, including the Next Generations Challenge, which creates opportunities to experience street sports; the Next Generations Games 2023, a place where children can shine; the Next Generations Elite Camp & Awards 2023, an opportunity to hone the skills necessary to be successful athletes; and the Shibuya Sports Academy 2023, a course to train sports producers.

Next Generations Challenge

The Next Generations Challenge aims to popularize street sports and works in conjunction with public spaces and events to create opportunities for children to experience street sports.
This year, special lecturers were invited to the Children and Youth Center Friends Honcho (6-6-2 Honcho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo), a place for children to gather, and trial sessions for double dutch, freestyle football, and parkour were held. In particular, the double dutch trial session was held multiple times, and the participating children were given the opportunity to present the results of their training.
In addition, we held a double dutch experience event at Shibuya East Exit Halloween held at Shibuya Stream (3-21-3 Shibuya, Shibuya-ku) in October 2023, and a double dutch, breaking, freestyle football, and parkour experience event at the 46th Kumin no Hiroba held at Yoyogi Park in November. In addition, we also held the "Seiketsunagari" project in collaboration with Kao Biore, which supports connections between "people and people" and "people and society" through the skin.

Next Generations Games 2023

The Next Generations Games is a battle-style street sports championship held as a place where U-15 children who are active in street sports can shine. The Next Generations Games, which began in 2018 and is being held for the sixth time this year, will be held in conjunction with "TOKYO Moshimo FES Shibuya 2023" held at Yoyogi Park in September 2023. In addition to the three previous events of breaking, double dutch, and hip hop, freestyle football has been added, and about 100 athletes from all over the country have gathered.
In addition to the battles, the event also included a street sports experience session and a special showcase by guest performers, and on the second day of the event, a special showcase was held featuring the athletes who made it to the Top 4.

Next Generations Elite Camp & Awards 2023

The Next Generations Elite Camp & Awards 2023 was held in March 2024 by invitation only for the top four athletes in each category at the Next Generations Games 2023. The Next Generations Elite Camp & Awards is a one-day workshop where participants learn the "mind, technique, body, and wisdom" necessary to become a top street sports athlete who will be active on the world stage in the future. In addition to acquiring knowledge, the event is also an opportunity to connect with athletes from other categories who they do not usually have much contact with, and parents are free to watch. It is an event that is highly satisfying for both children and parents.

Shibuya Sports Academy 2023

Shibuya Sports Academy is a school event for high school to university students to develop talent for producing sports. This project is divided into two semesters. In the first half of this year (September to October 2023), a collaboration project with TikTok was held, in which the creator "Sonosan" was invited as the instructor, and students produced a Shibuya Halloween manners awareness video that included street sports elements.

In the second semester (January to March), a curriculum was implemented to learn about the planning and management of sports events. An organizer who is also an active athlete and actively promotes his own sport was invited as a lecturer. Using the know-how of event planning acquired in the classroom, students organized the "CROSS CULTURE SESSION," a battle showcase event for street sports that transcend the genres of breaking, double dutch, freestyle football, and freestyle basketball, at Yoyogi Park's Keyaki-namiki Avenue on Sunday, February 18th. This event was also linked to the 5th JDSF All Japan Breaking Championships (sponsored by the Japan Dance Sport Federation), which was held at the NHK Hall from Saturday, February 17th to Sunday, February 18th, and was an initiative that also led to the promotion of the tournament.

About Next Generations
Focusing on the "next generation" who is the leader in expanding the possibilities of Shibuya and the city, we are proud to create a place where the "next generation" can "encounter" sports, "learn" from sports, and "shine" with your favorite sports. This is a “next generation” sports scene creation project that was launched in 2018 through industry-government-academia-private partnerships to design a city that can be used for sports. Shibuya, the origin of fashion and culture, is also a city where ancestors have pioneered street sports and their culture. We will recreate the place (playground) that has been lost with the development of the city, promote street sports and enlighten the manners, foster a sports culture unique to Shibuya, and aim to revive as "Shibuya = Mecca of street sports".
