Future Design Shibuya Co., Ltd. and Nikken Sekkei Co., Ltd. held an international competition "Urban Public Space Design Competition 2018" with the theme of "Shibuya" public space, with 224 points (495 application registrations). Ten sets of 10 works that passed the first screening were selected from among them, and the second screening was held on March 8th (Friday), and the highest award was given by Minako Okuma (Minako Architects). "People, insects, birds, and towns" won the highest award.

Shibuya-like public space

The city's public space competition, which started in 2016 and is now in its third year, broadly captures public spaces such as streets and plazas, rooftops of public facilities and buildings, and through activities in public spaces, the charm and vitality of the district. We are looking for design ideas and social systems that enhance the public space.

The 2018 competition was held with the theme of "Shibuya" public space, with Takayuki Kishii as the chairman of the judging committee, and Ryue Nishizawa, Chiaki Hayashi, and Natsuo Sato as the judging committee members. Redefining "Shibuya" as a word that means an attractive urban experience, setting the stage in various "Shibuya" -like town spaces and virtual spaces around the world, of course, the way and design of the space that enhances the attractiveness of the city, there Various perspectives and ideas were expected, such as the urban activities, social systems, and services provided.
