Press release

The "Shibuya 5G Entertainment Project", which hosted the "Virtual Shibuya au 5G Halloween Festival", has entered its second term, and 73 companies have participated in this term.

The "Shibuya 5G Entertainment Project", which is led by the general incorporated association Future Design Shibuya, KDDI Corporation, and the Shibuya Ward Tourism Association, reached its second term in April 2021. This year, 73 companies will participate and manage the project under a new system.
Last year, we created "Virtual Shibuya" officially recognized by Shibuya Ward, and while holding various events as a digital twin city, we also conducted planning and demonstration experiments using AR technology and 5G cameras in Shibuya Ward, the city of Shibuya. We have implemented a number of entertainment measures that combine cutting-edge technology. These efforts have been highly evaluated both in Japan and overseas, and the "Virtual Shibuya au 5G Halloween Festival" won the 7th JACE Event Awards Grand Prize, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award, Japan Event Grand Prize, and many other projects and measures. I was able to win the award.
Seven fields of art, education, tourism, music, sports, Esports, and Virtual City with the goal of commercialization or PoC (proof of concept) level planning and implementation so that further business creation efforts can be made this year. We will hold subcommittees in Japan to create a system that can utilize the areas of strength of each participating company.

Shinko Osada Chairman of Future Design Shibuya General Incorporated Association

The Shibuya 5G Entertainment Project is a project that truly embodies and implements the ideal way of public-private partnership that Future Design Shibuya aims for-co-creation and implementation by various actors with an unprecedented mechanism-and goes beyond the framework of the organization. As we move toward our goal as ONE TEAM, we repeat PoC and realize that we are evolving day by day. Like the "Virtual Shibuya" that was born in the Corona sword, it is a team that gathers around Shibuya to combine the challenges faced by the city with the potential of the future to make it a socially meaningful form with the power of creativity. That is why we can do it. With new partners welcoming this term, the independence of each company is becoming more and more important. I would like to move forward with a new feeling so that I can steadily generate new buds of business by utilizing the strongest platform centered on Shibuya x Entertainment.

Ichiro Miura, General Manager, Innovation Department, KDDI CORPORATION
Since participating in Future Design Shibuya in 2018, we launched the "Shibuya Entertainment Tech Promotion Project" in 2019, and then in 2020 we launched the current consortium "Shibuya 5G Entertainment Project". In just over two years, we have carried out more than 30 projects, and we were able to launch the representative work, "Virtual Shibuya" officially recognized by Shibuya Ward. Virtual Shibuya is a good example of the innovative efforts of local governments and companies that have great potential for imagining new businesses while working closely with Shibuya Ward to contribute to the development of the city. We will do our utmost to make this year a meaningful year for creating even more unique projects together with each subcommittee.

Jungo Kanayama, Representative Director, Shibuya City Tourism Association
Virtual Shibuya was launched in the spring of 2020 as a project to think about new possibilities for the city in the midst of the corona. Since the launch event, as an official space in Shibuya Ward, we will respond to regional issues such as creating activity opportunities for Halloween, Christmas, and community-based artists, and create alternative urban experience opportunities in collaboration with government agencies. I have been working on it.
In the future, we will work on more specific service development and POC with various companies and consumers gathering in Shibuya Ward, and at the same time, we will consider the virtual experience as "another real" and create a more exciting Shibuya Ward experience. I would like to contribute.

Comments from the subcommittee leader

Art Subcommittee Leader Eri Oda (TV Asahi Co., Ltd.)

Shibuya has the depth to accept diverse values and enjoy "differences" and the power to sublimate "differences" into the charm of the city. Art that blends with various fields and gives off a presence in the development of technology and major changes in society. What will happen if art is installed in the city of Shibuya? Expectations will increase.
I would like to realize new initiatives of Shibuya × Art with the participating companies. Thank you very much.

Education Subcommittee Leader Tom Nagae (Directions Co., Ltd.)
The challenges of the corona-stricken learning environment surrounding children have become more personal as parents with children. I think there are many things that can be challenged because Shibuya Ward has the foundation for ICT education at the top level among local governments nationwide. I would like to plan and promote highly effective projects in collaboration with the Board of Education. Please help us!

Tourism Subcommittee Leader Yoichi Okuhira (KADOKAWA Co., Ltd.)
In the first year when this project was launched, Professor Yoshiyuki Sadamoto worked on the production of "Virtual Shibuya Mayor" who anthropomorphized Hachiko. This year, we will aim to build a platform that can effectively disseminate various initiatives of Shibuya Ward, including PR of "Virtual Shibuya" utilizing this IP. In addition, with a view to expanding this initiative to other areas, we would like to collaborate with local governments and create measures unique to "virtual space."

Music Subcommittee Leader Sho Sakai (Live Nation Japan GK)
With the corona wreck restricting the movement and gathering of people around the world, it has become difficult for the music industry to hold live concerts as before, and the industry as a whole has been hit hard. However, a new culture of live concerts was born from that, and with the power of technology, people all over the world are now actively enjoying and sharing the same time and space through music, even though they are far away. It has been. With the keyword "World from Shibuya", the place called Virtual Shibuya sends various Japanese music not only to Japan but also to the world as the source of this new culture, and people all over the world seek it. I would like to create a space where people can gather.

Katsura Ueno, Leader of Sports Subcommittee (Sports Biz Co., Ltd.)
By multiplying "physical", which is the intuitive attraction of sports, with "digital" realized by 5G technology, what kind of "doing / watching" can be done, overcoming the borders of time, distance, common sense and imagination. Can you create it? We would like to collaborate with everyone in the Shibuya 5G Entertainment Project to create WOW moments through such challenges.

Esports Subcommittee Leader Satoshi Kasahara (PlayBrain Co., Ltd.)
Although esports has been featured in various media, it seems that the number of corporate groups involved in Japan, monetization, and the expansion of markets such as overseas are not yet progressing. Under such circumstances, we would like to make a project that can develop esports in Japan in the future by involving companies and cities of various business formats in a consortium such as the Shibuya 5G Entertainment Project. I would like to create content not only from the competition but also from the perspective of entertainment and sports.

Shibuya 5G Entertainment Project

Purpose
Looking ahead to the coming 5G era, we aim to keep Shibuya always at the cutting edge and active city and to create value for the next generation of Shibuya by shaping the future image of the city and the power of entertainment while making full use of technology. ..

background
In 2019, KDDI, Future Design Shibuya, and Shibuya City Tourism Association launched the predecessor "Shibuya Entertainment Tech Promotion Project" and expanded it as "Shibuya 5G Entertainment Project" with more than 30 companies in 2020. 73 companies will participate in 2021.

Contents
By multiplying the ideas, knowledge, and resources of participating companies, we will create a new experience value unique to Shibuya that combines real and virtual. While ensuring publicity and return to the city, we will continue to conduct demonstration experiments "with an eye on commercialization" and consider and carry out a full-scale business model.
