■KIM SONGHE Exhibition & Workshop
Fishing nets dumped into the ocean is a global problem. Of the marine plastic waste that washes up on Japan's coasts, fishing waste such as fishing nets and ropes accounts for about 30% (Ministry of the Environment survey/2016). These fishing nets are particularly difficult to decompose naturally among marine waste, and are said to continue to drift in the ocean for over 600 years. Chandelier artist Kim Songhe will use the fishing nets that have been dumped this time to create a new piece, which will be exhibited at Shibuya Ward's Kitatani Park.
The fishing nets used in this work were collected by fishermen in Numazu. The stuffed animals and toys used in the work were collected from each household by third-grade elementary school children as part of the Shibuya Future Studies class, which is conducted by Shibuya-ku Jinnan Elementary School in collaboration with Tokyu Corporation. The giant chandelier that appears by connecting the fishing nets with the stuffed animals and toys glitters and floats before our eyes like a reborn treasure ship, asking us what we really need for our future. Please look forward to Kim Songhye's new work.
<KIM SONGHE Profile>
Born in Tokyo in 1982 as a third-generation Korean resident of Japan, he attended a Korean school until the age of 18, and began his career as an artist after graduating from Oda Fashion College. After becoming independent as a chandelier artist in 2005, he has held various exhibitions at museums and galleries both in Japan and abroad.
