Shibuya Station Area Management General Incorporated Association, Shibuya Redevelopment Association General Incorporated Association

Reason for award

Over the past decade, new public facilities and skyscrapers have been built one after another around Shibuya Station as part of redevelopment projects, attracting many visitors. The award recognizes the efforts to "establish systems, structures, and mechanisms for seamlessly implementing urban design functions and urban space area management" in the area around Shibuya Station.
In addition to the distinctive urban design of the Shibuya Station area, such as the urban core with vertical traffic flow, the three-dimensional underground and aboveground structure, and the "Skyway" that connects the valley terrain unique to Shibuya horizontally, they have also worked on urban design and area management through collaboration between diverse and complex actors, such as the "Sign Project" in collaboration with multiple railway operators, large commercial facility developers and operators, local community organizations, local shopping district organizations, and the government, and the area management activities of "Social Innovation Week" which aims to promote industry in the Shibuya area. We have determined that this achievement is worthy of the Planning Design Award from the City Planning Institute of Japan.

Comments on receiving the award

Kenro Suto Founding Director and First Secretary General Future Design Shibuya General Incorporated Association
We believe this award recognizes the achievements and continuity of our urban development efforts through industry-government-academia-government-citizen collaboration, which has been led by Shibuya Ward for many years, and we are proud to be one of the recipients of the award, as our company was established in 2018 on the occasion of the Shibuya Ward Long-Term Master Plan. This time, five companies received the award, but it is only thanks to the understanding of the many people involved, especially the local community, that we are able to continue to have a system that strengthens Shibuya's unique style, and we would like to express our gratitude to everyone.
To date, we have collaborated on a range of activities, from system design to urban design for the entire area through coordination meetings, the establishment of area management organizations, and our company's activities to create new cultural value, such as Social Innovation Week.
Encouraged by this honor, we would like to continue to expand the possibilities of urban space management, such as the emergence of new culture, using Shibuya's diverse individuality and values as a driving force, as public spaces expand through urban revitalization and urban functions are reorganized and updated.
Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to Yasutaka Nishida of the Urban Infrastructure Planning Group, Urban and Social Infrastructure Department, Nikken Sekkei Ltd., for his recommendation.
